Goin’ to the Ballpark and We’re Gonna Get Married

By R Lincoln Harris

Love is in the air this year, especially at Wrigley Field. The venerable old park has been undergoing a makeover in recent years, and the enormous scoreboard in the left field bleachers is perhaps the most obvious upgrade of all. Last week, the scoreboard even served as a makeshift wedding chapel.

The 7th Inning Stretch Will Be Too Fast In Minnesota This Year

by R. Lincoln Harris
When it comes to major artists, nobody was more closely identified with his hometown than Prince was with Minneapolis. Purple Rain forever linked the Kid with the club known known as First Avenue and 7th Street Entry. While Prince’s star ascended to the very top of the music industry, he continued to make his home at Paisley Park, his compound located in suburban Minneapolis.

Prince’s sudden passing on April 21, at the age of 57, shocked music fans everywhere, but nowhere was the sting more profound than the Twin Cities. The Minnesota Twins immediately paid tribute by shading their Twitter page purple, and by lighting up Target Field in the color he will forever be associated with. “Purple Rain” was soon performed onstage by everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Beyonce to Mavis Staples. Magazine covers and art exhibits got into the act as well, but Target Field will top them all, by continuing to honor Prince throughout the baseball season.

Should you find yourself in the Minneapolis area this summer, on a day that the Twins are in town, a trip to Target Field should make for a memorable experience. Not only is it among the newest ballparks in baseball, with state-of-the-art amenities and dining fare available, the team will play Prince’s “Little Red Corvette” during the seventh-inning stretch for the remainder of the 2016 season. Although Fenway Park’s “Sweet Caroline” is one of the more celebrated fan traditions in baseball, they’ll have nothing on the cities that Prince called home.

No MLB 2016 April Fools in Chicago

by R. Lincoln Harris

The major league season is often compared to a marathon, and rightly so. No other sports league puts its players through 162 games a season, and they would go broke if they tried. It takes 10 baseball games to equal one football game in terms of overall importance on the regular season. The ratio drops to 2-to-1 for basketball and hockey, but the point is still clear: baseball games are, by far, the most bountiful commodity in professional sports.

Great Start To The 2016 MLB Season

With the first week of the 2016 MLB season in the books, we take a look at some of the notable games, matchups, players, and storylines that are already garnering some attention. Call it serendipity but MLB couldn’t have scheduled a more compelling opening day game than a World Series rematch between the Kansas City Royals and the New York Mets. The energy at Kaufmann Stadium harkened back to last October with tensions carrying over from the 2015 baseball classic. And like last years World Series, Matt Harvey pitched a tightly contested game only to lose 4-3 to Edinson Volquez. Game 2 yielded a similar result as last year with Noah Syndergaard pitching a 6 inning 9 strikeout gem, helping the Mets avoid a sweep with a 2-0 victory.

Even though it’s way too early to draw any conclusions, many of the the teams picked by the experts to contend this year seem to be rearing their heads already. The Detroit Tigers look like they’ve returned to form after missing the postseason last year for the first time in 4 years, trailing the Royals by half a game from the top of the American League Central at 3-1. The most contested division in baseball is back at it again with this year’s World Series favorite Chicago Cubs sitting atop of the National League Central at 5-1. Not to be out done by the Cubs, the Cincinnati Reds, believe it or not, are tied for first place at 5-1. To no one’s surprise the Pittsburgh Pirates are a half a game behind at 4-2. Raising eyebrows is the St. Louis Cardinals 0-3 start, a team that won 100 games last year finished the weekend strong to close out the week 3-3.

If history is any indication of what the future will bare, it’s an even year which means the San Francisco Giants will win another title, and yes the Giants are in first place in the National League West at 5-2. Not too long ago, ie 2014, fans at Oriole Park were treated to October baseball while making it all the way to the ALCS. With Buck Showalter at the helm, many felt the Orioles were establishing themselves as the new king of the hill in the American League East. Needless to say 2015 was extremely disappointing with the Orioles finishing in 3rd place and missing the playoffs with a 81-81 record. Now the team is raising eyebrows once again as the only undefeated team in all of baseball at 5-0 and in first place in the AL East ahead of the Red Sox, Yankees, and Blue Jays respectively.

As we all know baseball is a team sport centered around individual player performances that dominate the headlines. That being said Seattle Mariner second baseman Robinson Cano is off to the hottest start of his career, hitting 4 home runs and 7 rbi in his first 3 games. New York Yankee fans have to be all smiles with the debut of Starlin Castro at shortstop. The Yankees took a calculated gamble signing Castro as a free agent and it seems to be paying dividends with Starlin batting .450 and knocking in 8 rbi helping the Bronx Bombers to a 3-2 start. Shifting gears to the National League West the Colorado Rockies are looking like a potential nightmare to opposing pitchers with DJ LeMahieu batting .478 (3rd in the majors), Trevor Story belting 7 homers in 6 games (1st in the majors and best start ever), and Carlos Gonzalez hitting 3 home runs (tied for 3rd in the majors).

With the season off to an auspicious start, 2016 looks like it will deliver thrills and fanfare from season’s past. This week’s notable game matchups!!!

Marlins at Mets
Orioles at Red Sox
Yankees at Blue Jays
Reds at Cubs
Royals at Astros

Eye-Popping Ballpark Foods

My mother used to always say to me when I piled too much food on my plate, “Your eyes were bigger than your stomach!”. Well these ballpark gastro-masterpieces fit right into that category. With an urgency for teams to enhance the in-game experience, food concessionaires are pulling out all the stops to make a spectacular food item as popular as a home run. Below are some of the new items to hit the stands in 2016:

Atlanta Braves– The Burgerizza
Can’t decide if you crave a burger or pizza? Well now you don’t have to with The Burgerizza! It’s a burger with a pepperoni pizza as the top bun. Maybe you can share it with your section at Turner Field!

New York Mets– 108 Burger
Pat Lafrieda has been making special blends of meat for years. Now he has introduced the 108 Burger at Citi Field. It’s available at Keith’s Grill in Section 132. It’s filled with New York love. The burger comes with hand-sliced pastrami, Havarti cheese and smeared with NY deli mustard. All of this delivered on a pretzel bun.

Kansas City Royals – Champions Alley Burger & Hot Dog
The World Champions are celebrating their victory with new tasty treats at Kaufman Stadium. New to the team is a double play duo of the Champions Alley Burger & Hot Dog. The hot dog comes wrapped in bacon and the burger is stuffed with cheese. Both items are tempura-battered for extra goodness!

Pittsburgh Pirates – Cracker Jack & Mac Dog
PNC Park takes the phrase “Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks…” to the next level. Take a hot dog, add some mac & cheese, sprinkle on some jalapenos, and cover it with Cracker Jacks. But wait, there’s more- top the whole thing with caramel! Pirates fans are in for a treat, and a Cracker Jack prize just might be inside!

Texas Rangers– The Wicked Pig
Everybody knows everything is bigger in Texas. The Wicked Pig is no exception. Why not have one sandwich when you can have a double? This double-decker work of art is stacked with pulled pork, bacon, sausage, prosciutto, ham and pork rinds. Add coleslaw and a slathering of barbecue sauce and you are in Wicked Pig heaven. This treat will cost you $27 but its worth it!

New York Yankees – The Barnyard Wedding
Not a lot of barns around Yankee Stadium but the Yankees are presenting the Barnyard Wedding sandwich to their fans this year. This custom-blended beef burger is topped with cheddar cheese, a fried chicken cutlet, hash browns and barbecue sauce, all nested inside a pretzel bun. The farm is well represented when the Yankee fans take a bite of this marriage of fan favorites!
